Dhaka, August 6: June to September is the dengue season. Compared to the months of June and July last year, the number of dengue patients has increased 60 times in the two months of 2021! Again, just counting August, it exceeds 70 times. Entomologists had predicted the outcome earlier. Last June, they had said that dengue would increase several times if immediate action was not taken.

According to the investigation, 20 people were infected with dengue in June last year, 23 in July and 68 in August. And this August alone, an average of 250 people are infected every day. In June this year, 272 people were infected, 2,286 in July and 1,025 in the first four days of August.

From June to the first four days of August this year, a total of 3,583 people have been infected in 65 days. In the first four days of August last year, 51 people were infected. As a result, the number of patients has increased 70 times during this time of the year compared to 2020.

When asked, Dr. Kabirul Bashar, Professor and Entomologist, Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University, said, "I have been saying since the beginning of June this year that dengue will increase. No one listened. The mayor of the north was a bit vocal on the field. They did some work. But that wasn’t enough."

He added, "The picture we see of dengue is not perfect. There are more patient. All hospitals do not give information. In the case of corona, the numbers are only from those who get tested. The same thing is happening with dengue."

He advised, "Now to control dengue, a committee should be formed with the local population in each ward as a priority of the city corporation. Each committee should have one larviciding sprayman and one adulticides sprayman. You have to keep a cleaner with them. The people's representatives will lead. We have to do the work at once."

Kabirul Bashar further said, "The problem of the city corporations is they start work only after the situation worsens. They don't take action even after we predict an outcome."

North City Mayor Atiqul Islam said, "We are trying our best. In addition to the daily campaign, I am continuing the mobile court and propaganda. I have been making people aware."

He added, "I urge the city dwellers to clean the waterlogged and unclean places of the house at least 10 minutes every Saturday morning. I hope dengue will come under control."
