Covid-19 infection is on the rise at the border as ICU, manpower shortage looms large

Dhaka, June 1: Coronavirus infections have risen sharply in seven districts bordering India. At the same time, the number of deaths has started increasing due to various crises in medical management in the district hospitals.

It is learned that patients are not getting proper ICU support in any of the border districts. As a result, they are dying on the streets before being taken to the departmental city, medical college hospital or the capital in critical condition. Added to this is the acute manpower crisis in the district hospitals. All in all, there has been an extreme mismanagement in the medical sector.

According to government policy, each district headquarters hospital must have 10 to 20 bed ICU. According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a 100-bed hospital must have at least a 10-bed ICU.

According to the Department of Health, among the border districts of Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Natore, Satkhira, Jessore, Rajshahi and Chuadanga, more people are being infected with the Indian type. However, most of the hospitals in these districts do not have a complete system of corona treatment. Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Sadar Hospital has a 20-bed covid unit but no ICU. If the patient's condition is bad, he has to be taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for ICU support. The situation is similar in other district hospitals.

Prevention and treatment of corona infection On June 2 last year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed to set up ICU units, ventilators and high oxygen supply in every district hospital. But public health experts are blaming the negligence of the health department for not setting up ICU units at the district level so far. They see the failure of ICUs in district hospitals as an extreme failure of the health department despite the directives of the Prime Minister.
