Cox's Bazar woman held for allegedly killing mother-in-law, cutting her body into pieces

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 18: Police arrested a woman, Rasheda Begum (23), for allegedly killing her old mother-in-law in Cox's Bazar's Ramu and cutting the body into six pieces and burying it in the yard.

She was arrested after the body was recovered on Sunday (July 17) afternoon. The murder took place in Madhya Umkhali Hazir Para of South Mitachhari Union of Ramur at around 11:30 pm on Saturday. Rasheda is the daughter of Syed Noor of Chhota Chowdhury Para, Varuakhali, Cox's Bazar Sadar. The deceased's name is Mumtaz Begum (60). She was the wife of late Abdul Quader of that neighborhood. Rasheda, the arrested daughter-in-law, is the niece of the deceased.

Member of Mithachhari Ward No. 3, Amir Hamza, citing the family, said that Alamgir, the only son of Mumtaz Begum, works in a hotel in Kalatali, Cox's Bazar. He left before evening on Saturday to join night duty. At night, his wife quarreled with her mother-in-law. At one stage, after killing the mother-in-law, she cut off her two hands, two legs, and head, and buried next to the tubewell of the house.

When he came home on Sunday morning and looked for his mother, she angrily told her that his mother had gone to her daughter's house in Chakaria. After finding out that she did not go there, he started searching in different places. In the afternoon, when he saw the new loose soil near the tube well of the house, and found his mother's saree after digging a little, he informed the police with the help of the locals. Later, the police recovered six pieces of Mumtaz Begum's body.

Arup Kumar Chowdhury, OC (Investigation) of Ramu Police Station, said that the police recovered Mumtaz Begum's head, two severed hands and two legs. The incident is believed to have happened due to a family dispute. The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
