Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 7: Health Minister Zahid Maleque said that the maximum punishment for drug adulterers is death penalty, second - life imprisonment, third - rigorous imprisonment up to 14 years. He said that there is such punishment in the Special Powers Act 1972.

On Sunday (November 6), the Health Minister said this in response to member of reserved women's seat Begum Lutfun Nessa Khan's public question regarding punishment for manufacturing and marketing adulterated medicine.

Admitting that adulterated drugs are sold in the market, he said, "It happens in some cases, I will not say that it does not happen at all. About 98 percent of medicines are manufactured in our country and are being exported to about 63 countries. However, the Drug Administration works to control counterfeit drugs. There are many types of drug administration measures in place to prevent counterfeit drugs from being manufactured and marketed."

Zahid Maleque said, if the medicine is adulterated, the patient will surely die. Not only that, he may have kidney failure, various problems will arise. Several steps have been taken to prevent these.

He said - In the meantime, a draft has been prepared in 'The Drugs Act-1948, Drugs Ordinance-1958 Rohitkalpa Drug Act-2022' considering drug adulterants as criminals. which was approved in the cabinet meeting. Which has been sent to the Ministry of Law.

Zahid Maleque addressed BNP Member of Parliament Harunur Rashid, not only adulteration in medicine, but you say adulteration in food! Now I will say that not only in these, but also in politics adulteration has been created. When the army chief declared himself to be the president, having all the power of the country, then the politics also got confused. You created that mess. Now you carry sticks in meetings, processions, gatherings, but sticks are not acceptable here. Even after that you are holding meetings with sticks. It can also be called adulteration in politics. The minister made this comment while introducing the International Philanthropy Research Centre, Bill 2022 in the National Parliament.
