Dhaka-17 constituency by-election today

Dhaka, July 17: The by-election for Dhaka-17 seat of the Jatiya Sangsad will be held today. Meanwhile elections of a total of 78 local government institutions of the country will be held today. Voting will be conducted continuously from 8 am to 4 pm. The Election Commission (EC) has already completed all the preparations for the elections. The election material reached the election area by Sunday afternoon.

Election campaigning was stopped in the constituency last Saturday morning and motorcycle driving was banned at midnight. A general ban has been imposed on the movement of trucks, minibuses, microbuses, jeeps, pickups, cars and easy bikes in the constituency from 12 pm on Sunday. However, the highways remain out of this ban. Apart from this, this ban will be relaxed in the case of officials and employees engaged in election work, election observers and journalists, law and order forces and vehicles used for emergency services.

Dhaka-17 Constituency consisting of Gulshan, Banani, Bhasantek Thana and Cantonment areas of the capital fell vacant after the death of actor Akbar Hossain Pathan (Farooq) on May 15. Voting in this by-election will be by ballot. There will be CC cameras in the polling booths of each polling station. The number of total voters of this constituency is 3 lakh 25 thousand 205. Among them, women voters are 1 lakh 53 thousand 580. Votes will be accepted in 605 polling booths of 124 polling stations.

There are eight competing candidates in the Dhaka-17 seat by-election. Among them, the party candidates are Mohammad Ali Arafat of Awami League, Sikdar Anisur Rahman of Jatiya Party, Kazi Md. Rashidul Hasan of Zaker Party, Sheikh Habibur Rahman of Trinamool BNP, Md. Rezaul Islam Swapan of Bangladesh Congress and Md. Akbar Hossain of Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Jot and independent candidates include Md. Ashraful Alam (Hero Alam) and Md. Tariqul Islam.

Out of the 78 local government institutions that are going to be elected across the country on Monday, the general election or all posts will be held in 39. General elections will be held in seven of these municipalities. Votes will be taken in EVMs in these seven municipalities. The municipalities are Bhandaria in Pirojpur, Chengarchar in Chandpur, Devidwar in Comilla, Benapole in Jessore, Dohazari in Chittagong, Gosairhat in Shariatpur and Tarash in Sirajganj. Apart from this, there will be by-elections for councilor posts in Muksudpur of Gopalganj, Jamalpur of Jamalpur and Domar of Nilphamari.

By-elections for the post of Vice Chairman of Upazila Parishad will be held in Bagha of Rajshahi and Sandwip upazila of Chittagong. Apart from this, 66 Union Parishad elections will be held. Out of this, 29 will be general and 37 by-elections.
