Digital Security Act will not be repealed, it will be reformed: Law Minister

Dhaka, May 3: Law Minister Anisul Huq said, "I want to say unequivocally that the Digital Security Act will not be repealed. However, we hope that this law will be reformed by September."

He said this in a panel discussion titled 'Shaping a Future of Rights' organized by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on the occasion of World Free Media Day-2023 on Wednesday.

Stating that the government is working to prevent the misuse of the Digital Security Act, the law minister said, "The problem of the Digital Security Act will be removed and it will be made a universal law. Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina will never take away the freedom of the press."

He said, "The Digital Security Act was not enacted to take away media freedom. It was made to ensure cyber security."

TIB Executive Director Dr. Ambassador of Sweden Alex Berg von Linde, Incharge of UNESCO Dhaka Office Suzan Vaiz, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Chairman of Human Rights Commission Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Teacher of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University Dr. Geeti Ara Nasreen, Executive Editor of Dhaka Tribune Riaz Ahmed and others were present in the ceremony moderated by Iftekharuzzaman. was present

Dr. Giti Ara Nasrin said, "We see that having more media does not ensure freedom of media. The most important thing is to be able to work freely. Various studies have come out that countries where there is more freedom of media and more flow of information have not had a famine in the country."

She said, "Research has shown that in countries where inequality is high, media freedom is low. That is, if inequality increases, media freedom will decrease."

He also said, "Acid terrorism was once a big problem in Bangladesh. It has reduced today with the contribution of media. Media should not work for fear or advantage."
