Doctor sets wife, himself on fire due to divorce

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 1 March 2024: In Raipura, Narsingdi, angry husband poured petrol on himself and his ex-wife and set himself on fire. In this incident, two days after the death of Khalilur Rahman Khalil, his ex-wife Dr. Lata Akhtar (32) also died while undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the capital on Thursday around 12:30 pm.

Lata Akhtar's death was confirmed to reporters by her uncle Farooq. He said on mobile that the body of the deceased has been brought home by the hospital and will be buried in the family graveyard as per the rules.

Earlier on January 25, this incident took place at Dr. Lata's father's house in Brahmantek area of Morjal Union of Upazila. After getting information about the incident, the locals rescued the two people who were burnt from the woman's house and took them to Narsingdi Hospital. From there, the burnt woman was treated at Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute Hospital. And Khalilur was sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical.

The victim, Lata Akhter, is the daughter of Mofiz Uddin of Brahmanertek village, Morjal Union, Raipura Upazila. He has passed from Shahabuddin Medical College of Dhaka Gulshan area. Served as a doctor in a private hospital in Narayanganj. Her ex-husband Khalilur Rahman is the son of Atar Ali Bepari of Belashi village in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur district.

It is reported that after a long love affair between doctors Lata and Khalil, they got married secretly two years ago. But Khalil got married hiding his driver identity. So two months ago, the woman sent her husband a divorce letter through a lawyer. But Khalil wants to marry her. In this regard, village arbitration was held last month. Even in the arbitration, Lata objected to having a family with him. Later on Sunday afternoon, Khalil went to Lata's father's house, knocked on the house, closed the door and poured petrol on himself and his ex-wife and set them on fire.
