EC formation: Search Committee hands over 10 names to President

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 25: The Search Committee constituted to form the Election Commission has submitted a ten-name recommendation to President Md. Abdul Hamid.

President's Press Secretary Md. Joynal Abedin told a briefing that the Search Committee handed over the list of 10 names to the President on Thursday evening.

Members of the Search Committee Justice SM Quddus Zaman of the High Court Division, Auditor General and Controller of Bangladesh Md. Muslim Chowdhury, Chairman of the Bangladesh Labour Commission Md. Sohrab Hossain, former Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain and fiction professor Anwara Syed Haque were present.

The President's Press Secretary said that the President appreciated the overall activities of the Search Committee. The President hoped that a strong and acceptable election commission would be formed on the basis of the recommendations of the committee. This Election Commission will be able to conduct future national and local elections in a fair and impartial manner. The President thanked all the members of the Search Committee.

This is the first time that an Election Commission is being formed through a Search Committee under a law. The list was prepared by the Search Committee headed by Justice Obaidul Hasan of the Appellate Division.

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam was present on the occasion. He told reporters that the Search Committee had handed over a list of 10 people to the President. The President will soon announce the names of the Chief Election Commissioner and four other Election Commissioners.

After receiving the proposal from the Search Committee, President Md. Abdul Hamid expressed hope that an Election Commission acceptable to all would be formed on its basis. The President expressed this hope in a meeting with the members of the Search Committee when they went to Bangabhaban to submit the final 10 names.

After the meeting, President's Press Secretary Md. Joynal Abedin said that the President had commended and thanked the members of the inquiry committee for their relentless efforts.

The Press Secretary said the President hoped that based on the recommendations of the committee, it would be possible to form a strong and acceptable Election Commission which would be able to conduct free and fair national and local elections in future.
