EC formation: Search Committee looking for acceptable candidates

He said this after the fourth meeting of the Search Committee at the Supreme Court's Judges' Lounge on Wednesday (February 16). Shamsul Arefin said the search committee will complete the process as soon as possible. Verification and selection from the proposed list of 322 people is in progress. He said the eligible persons will be selected as per law.

When he was asked if there was any decision made in the meeting, Shamsul said nothing could be said at the moment. It will be done according to the law.

When asked whether any of the names had been withdrawn, he said no decision had been taken. He added that the next meeting of the search committee will be held on Saturday (February 19) at 11 am. Earlier, the meeting of the Search Committee started at 4:45 pm and lasted till 8 pm.

The meeting was attended by Cabinet Secretary (Coordination and Reforms) Shamsul Arefin in the absence of Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam.

The meeting was chaired by Justice Obaidul Hasan, Chairman of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, and was attended by members of the Search Committee, Justice SM Quddus Zaman of the High Court, Auditor General and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Md. Sohrab Hossain, Former Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain and Writer-Professor Anwara Syed Haque.

Earlier on Tuesday (February 15), Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the process of nominating 10 candidates for the post of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners would begin on Wednesday (February 16). He said the list of 322 people proposed to the Search Committee is being checked and selected. Those whose names appear twice have been named once. The names of 10 people will be proposed to the President shortly.
