Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 12: A total of 30 political parties and professional organizations have proposed names for the formation of the new Election Commission (EC).

The names have been given to the Search Committee by 24 registered political parties, including Awami League, and six professional organizations. The names were proposed by political parties and professional organizations until 5 pm on Friday (February 11), the previously announced deadline.

Shafiul Azim, joint secretary of the cabinet division, told reporters at the secretariat on Friday afternoon. The Cabinet Division is providing secretarial assistance to the Search Committee.

Meanwhile, Awami League's Information and Research secretary Dr. Selim Mahmud and deputy office secretary Sayem Khan submitted names on behalf of the party in the cabinet division at 12:30 pm on Friday.

In this regard, Dr. Selim Mahmud said, "We have submitted a sealed paper on behalf of the Awami League."

However, reliable sources said the Awami League has given a list of names of not more than 10 people.

Shafiul Azim, joint secretary of the cabinet department, said, "We had issued a public notice on February 6. There were opportunities for e-mail and direct speech. In that case we have received enough response. It was quite spontaneous from home and abroad. So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange. In that case we can say that we have got a lot of names."

He said, "We had asked the registered political parties for nominations till 5 pm on Friday. At this time we have received proposals from 24 political parties. I have also received names from six professional organizations, including Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Krishibid Institute and Institute of Engineers."
