EC Formation EC formation: Search Committee to submit 10 names to the President today
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 24: The Search Committee will submit a list of 10 names to President Mohammad Abdul Hamid to form the Election Commission. From this list, the President will appoint one Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four Election Commissioners (EC). The list will be submitted today, Thursday (February 24).
President's Press Secretary Md. Joynal Abedin said the Search Committee will hand over the list of selected names to the President at Bangabhaban in the evening. He added that the names of the new election commission are expected to be announced soon.
Earlier, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, who was acting secretary of the Search Committee, said the committee had finalized the names of 10 possible candidates. The list includes two candidates for the post of CEC and eight candidates for the post of Election Commissioners.
The head of the search committee is Justice Obaidul Hasan of the Appellate Division. Other members are Justice SM Quddus Zaman, former Election Commissioner Muhammad Sohul Hossain, Writer-Professor Anwara Syed Haque, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Muslim Chowdhury and Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Sohrab Hossain.
During its tenure, the committee held seven internal meetings as well as a meeting with 47 eminent citizens to seek advice on the formation of the EC. Then on February 14, the cabinet division published the names of 322 people.
