EC formation: Search Committee will not reveal proposers' names

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 14: The names proposed to the Search Committee for the posts of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners will be published on the website of the Cabinet Division on Monday (February 14) evening. However, the names of the proposers will not be disclosed.

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters after the third meeting of the search committee with eminent personalities on Sunday.

He said those among the registered political parties who have not yet submitted their list of names will be able to submit their proposed names for the EC by email by 5 pm on Monday. Only political parties will get this opportunity. The next meeting of the search committee will be held on Tuesday afternoon.

The third and final meeting of the committee with eminent citizens began in the conference room of the Supreme Court after 4 pm on Sunday. It was attended by eminent educationist Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, cultural personality Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Golam Qudduch of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, Lt. Col. (Retd) Sajjad Ali Zahir, former Additional IGP Nurul Alam, lyricist and composer Gazigar Haque, Sujan Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Prof. Dr. Ainun Nishat, Former Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Economist Dr. Kazi Khaliquzzaman Ahmed, Generation-1 Asif Munir, Dr. Nuzhat Chowdhury, Prof. Muntasir Mamun, Writer and Journalist Shahriar Kabir, economist Dr. Tofail Ahmed.

At the beginning of the meeting, Appellate Division Justice Obaidul Hasan, chief of the search committee, urged the BNP to submit the list of names for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners by 5 pm on Monday. He said the names of everyone whiche have come to the search committee will be published on the website of the cabinet division.

The term of the current Election Commission (EC) is ending today, February 14. Before that a new election commission is to be formed. This is the first time after independence that the EC is being formed according to the law. On January 27, the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Bill-2022 was passed in the Parliament.

A search committee was formed on February 5 to select the person eligible for the EC. After the committee proposes the names of 10 people, the President will appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and four Election Commissioners from there.
