Dhaka, Feb 8: Like other democratic countries in the world, the Election Commission of Bangladesh has been made an effective election commission through necessary powers and laws. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the National Parliament that the Election Commission is completely independent at present.

The Prime Minister said this in response to a question by Ali Azam, a member of parliament from the ruling party, during the question and answer session of the National Parliament session on Wednesday.

The head of government said that Awami League is committed to ensuring democracy and people's right to vote in the light of the constitution.

"Like other democratic countries in the world, the Election Commission of Bangladesh has been made an effective election commission through necessary powers and laws. The Election Commission is now completely independent. Because, after the formation of the Awami League government, the Election Commission Secretariat Act was enacted in 2009. Through this, the Election Commission has been given all administrative, financial, legal, regulatory and legislative and policy making powers," she said.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that by 2041, the development of a prosperous Sonar Bangla, the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, would be possible.

She said, "We have the steadfast trust and unwavering support of the immense people of Bangladesh in our ambitious dream journey. No evil force can block the way of this democratic process of development of Bangladesh."
