Electricity production to start in Payra on Sunday

Dhaka, June 23: A ship named 'MV Athena' is staying at Payra port with 41 thousand 207 tons of coal. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel from Indonesia arrived at the inner anchorage of Payra Port at around 2 AM on Friday. The authorities have made all preparations to start the plant on Sunday, June 25.

Payra Seaport Deputy Director (Traffic) Azizur Rahman said that the ship MV Athena is located at a depth of 10 meters in the inter anchorage of the port. It is 200 meters long and 32.26 meters wide. Another ship with coal is scheduled to arrive on July 1. More than 10 more ships are scheduled to arrive for the Payra Thermal Power Plant in a phased manner after Eid.

Due to coal shortage, production of Payra thermal power plant stopped at 12:00 pm on June 5.

Meanwhile, another ship from Indonesia brought 63 thousand tons of coal for Matarbari thermal power plant in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar. Captain Masud and Captain Shams brought the ship to Matarbari jetty from Chittagong port on Friday 23rd June at around 11:00 pm, said the port authority.

Chittagong Port Authority official Ataul Hakim Siddique said, this ship brought 63 thousand tons of coal from Indonesia to the jetty of Matarbari thermal power plant at around 11 o'clock on Friday. In the last two months, five ships with more than 300,000 tons of coal arrived at this port. After evacuation, the coal will be taken to the project area.

Before this, on June 14, the fourth ship of Indonesia brought 54 thousand 740 tons of coal. Last April 25, the ship carrying coal for Matarbari thermal power station in Chittagong Port was the largest ship in the history of Bangladesh.
