Ferry fire: Most burn victims critical, says senior doctor

Own representative, Dhaka, December 25: Five people, including a woman and a child injured in a launch fire at Jhalokati, have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute. The condition of most of them is critical, said the chief coordinator of the burn unit Dr. Samantalal Sen.

On Friday afternoon, Jasmine Akhter, a six-month pregnant woman, along with her eight-year-old son Tanim were brought from Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College. On the way, her six-year-old daughter Mehreen died in Mawa.

According to the doctors, the amount of burns in Tanim's body is more than 30 percent. And Jasmine was burned 10 percent.

Dr Samantalal Sen said 10 out of 81 people admitted in Barisal have been referred to Dhaka. In the meantime, five people have been admitted. The condition of all of them is critical. A seven-member medical team has been sent from Dhaka to assist Barisal Medical college hospital

Meanwhile, the naval police said that even after the fire started on the launch, it continued for an hour. Although there were two stops in between, the launch was not stopped.

Naval Police Officer Syed Mahbubur Rahman said the fire was reported to have started from the engine room after talking to injured passengers at the hospital. It was initially thought that the engine room operator was not in the engine room or that he had fled after the fire broke out.
