Dhaka, April 14: A fire broke out at a tin-shedded godown at Suritola in the capital's Nawabpur. The fire was brought under control around 11:45 pm, nearly two hours after it started. Director (Operation) of Fire Service and Civil Defense Lt. Col. Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury confirmed the matter.

The fire service received information about the fire at 10:08 p.m. on Thursday (April 13). The fire spread to several nearby godowns. Rafi Al Farooq, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate, said that 14 fire service units are working at the scene under control.

Meanwhile, ISPR said that the Bangladesh Army worked together to control the fire in Nawabpur. This information was informed in a press release on behalf of ISPR at around 11:22 pm on Thursday. In that notification, it is said that the Bangladesh Army is working to control the fire in Nawabpur.

The fire service said that they are investigating whether the fire at Ayub Bhavan on Lutfar Rahman Lane in Suritola started from gas line or cylinder leakage. Director of Operations and Maintenance Branch of Fire Service and Civil Defense Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury confirmed this information.

He said, after extinguishing the fire, we found gas lines and gas cylinders at the scene. However, it can be clearly stated by investigating whether the fire started from gas line leakage or cylinder. Where the fire broke out was the godown and the godown staff's mess. At least 20 godowns were gutted due to fire.

This fire service official also said that we had to get a lot of speed to reach the place of fire. Besides, the work is somewhat disrupted due to the eager crowd while extinguishing the fire.

He said, "We received information about the fire in the control room on Thursday, April 13, at 10:08 pm. Ten units of fire service reached the spot within 10:20 pm and started firefighting operations. Four more units joined them later. The fire service personnel were able to bring under control a total of 14 units in an effort of about one and a half hours. There were no casualties."
