Dhaka, July 3: Newly elected Mayor Gazipur City Corporation's Zayda Khatun, Barisal's Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokan Serniabat) and Sylhet's Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury and re-elected Mayor Khulna's Talukdar Abdul Khalek and Rajshahi's AHM Khairuzzaman Liton took oath. On Monday, July 3, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath to the mayors of five cities in two separate ceremonies at the Shapla Hall of her office.

First, at 10 am on Monday, the Prime Minister administered the oath to Gazipur City Corporation elected Mayor Zayda Khatun, Khulna Talukdar Abdul Khalek and Barisal's Abul Khair Abdullah (Khokon Serniabat). Meanwhile, local government minister Tajul Islam administered the oath to councilors of general wards and women councilors of reserved wards of three cities.

On May 25, Gazipur and Khulna and Barisal City Corporation elections were held on June 12. Later on June 5 Gazipur and June 20 Barisal and Khulna city elected mayors and councilors gazettes were published.

Prime Minister administered oath to AHM Khairuzzaman Liton of Rajshahi and Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury of Sylhet at 2 pm. Later, newly elected councilors of general wards of two city corporations and 76 councilors of reserved women seats also took oath at the same place. 40 from Rajshahi and 36 from Sylhet among those who took the oath.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md. Tajul Islam read the oath to the councillors.

Local Government Department Secretary Muhammad Ibrahim conducted both the swearing-in ceremonies. Minister of State for LGRD and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharya was present on the stage.

Awami League's mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton won the Rajshahi City Corporation election on June 21 with 160,290 votes. His closest rival is the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh. Murshid Alam got 13 thousand 483 votes.

On the same day, Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury was elected mayor by getting 1 lakh 18 thousand 614 votes in the Sylhet City Corporation election. His nearest rival Nazrul Nazrul Islam Babu of Jatiya Party got 50 thousand 321 votes.
