Four Bangladeshis receive India's Padma Awards

Dhaka, November 9: The late Syed Moazzem Ali, the former High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, received the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor. Dr. Enamul Haque, a renowned archaeologist, writer and pioneer of the museum movement in Bangladesh, received the fourth highest honor, the Padma Shri.

Tuhfa Zaman Ali, wife of the late Moazzem Ali, received the Padma Bhushan award on his behalf at a colorful ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi on Monday (November 8), while Dr. Enamul Haque received his Padma Shri in person. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind handed over the prestigious award to them.

Syed Moazzem Ali was nominated for the Padma Bhushan and Dr. Enamul Haque was nominated for the Padma Shri last year. On the occasion of the 71st Republic Day of India, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced to honour them on January 25, 2020.

Besides, this year ‘Padma Shri’ has been given to two more talented personalities of Bangladesh, Sanjida Khatun and Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir, Bir Pratik. But due to the coronavirus pademic, the Indian government had not been able to organize the award ceremony so far. The prizes were handed over to the winners of the two consecutive years on Monday due to the recent improvement in the Covid-19 situation in the country.

This year, a total of 119 names have been announced as recipients of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards. Of these, seven are getting Padma Vibhushan, 10 are getting Padma Bhushan and 102 are getting Padma Shri. Among the awardees are 29 women, 16 deceased and one transgender.
