Dhaka, November 12: France has said it will stand by Bangladesh until a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis is found. Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen made the remarks at a press briefing in Paris on Wednesday. He said the call was made by Bangladesh during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's talks with top leaders of France.

The Foreign Minister said Bangladesh, being a permanent member of the UN Security Council, called upon France to take action on the Rohingya issue in the Security Council. In this regard, France has assured that they will stand by Bangladesh until the Rohingya crisis is resolved permanently.

"We will wholeheartedly stand by Bangladesh until a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis is reached," Momen quoted French leaders as saying during talks between Sheikh Hasina and other high-ranking leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Jean Castex.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently in France on a five-day state visit at the invitation of the President of France.

Momen said the prime minister's meeting with all French leaders, especially the president, focused on the Rohingya issue. He said the leaders of France were informed that Bangladesh was trying to resolve the crisis from different angles.

"We are trying to resolve the Rohingya crisis bilaterally, trilaterally and multilaterally," he said. "We even went to the International Criminal Court (ICT). We have said that Myanmar has created this problem and the solution is in their hands."

On the issue of the recent military coup in Myanmar, Momen said that after the coup, Bangladesh did not hold any direct talks with the military junta rulers of Myanmar.

"We have told French leaders that the West is continuing its trade with Myanmar," he said. "But they have stopped putting pressure on Myanmar. The question for France is whether it will be possible to move forward with a dialogue on repatriation during the military rule."
