Dhaka, March 11: The long-awaited fuel oil import from India through the pipeline will start from March 18.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said this while inspecting the latest progress of the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline at Parbatipur in Dinajpur on Friday.

He said, the long-awaited fuel oil import from India to Bangladesh is starting on March 18 through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. On that day, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will jointly officially inaugurate the fuel oil import program of the receiving terminal of the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline established at Parbatipur in Dinajpur.

After the inspection, a short rally organized by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) was organized at the tank-lorry terminal area adjacent to the project.

In the gathering, the Minister said that this is the first time in the history of the country that fuel oil is being imported through the pipeline. It is the product of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's far-reaching thinking. Her commitment to the development of the region has been reflected in the pipeline oil import program from India. Also, one of the objectives of this project is to ensure uninterrupted energy supply and security in the agriculture and power sector in the northern part of the country. In particular, with the aim of meeting the energy needs of the 150 MW power plant of Syedpur in Nilphamari and other diesel-powered power plants in the region, a receiving terminal for importing fuel oil (diesel) from India through a pipeline has been set up at Parbatipur in Dinajpur. As a result of the launch of this project, there will be an opportunity to buy fuel oil at an affordable price than the international market price. All the activities of the project will be carried out with state-of-the-art automation systems without the touch of human hands.

Currently, the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline project is nearing completion. Initially, the duration of this project was 30 June 2022. Later the period was extended till June 2023.

A 60 km pipeline from Numaligarh Refinery to Siliguri Rail Terminal in the eastern Indian state of Assam along with a 130 km pipeline from Siliguri Terminal to Parbatipur have been constructed. Out of this, 5 km in India part and 125 km in Bangladesh part.
