Dhaka, March 24: The government has taken a plan to build a subway to keep Dhaka free from traffic jams and congestion. Roads and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the remarks at a seminar on feasibility study for construction of subway in Dhaka city at a hotel in the capital on Wednesday (March 24) morning. The minister was virtually connected from his official residence.

The bridge minister said Japan's PADECO, BCL Associates, KSC and Bates have been jointly hired as consultants for feasibility study under the leadership of Spain's TYPSA for construction of subway in Dhaka city.

The consulting firm initially proposed alignment of 11 routes for the subway network in Dhaka. Of which 4 routes are included in the initial design work on priority basis.

These 4 routes are- about 29 km from Jhilmil to Tongi, about 23 km from Shahkabir Mazar Road to Sadarghat, about 20 km from Keraniganj to Sonapur and about 48 km from Jahangirnagar University to Narayanganj.

The Minister of Road Transport and Bridges hoped that the construction of this project would relocate 4 million people out of about 8 million working people in Dhaka city underground and the surface of the land would be free from traffic jams and congestion.

He said the work of laying railway and road slabs on the Padma Bridge, the largest mega project in the country, was progressing at a fast pace.

He expressed hope that the Padma Bridge would be opened to traffic by June 2022 after completion of construction work.

The bridge minister said the boring work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under construction along the Karnafuli River in Chittagong has already been completed with the replacement of a tube ring about two and a half kilometers long. The construction work of 200 meter road slab of the tube has been completed. The 700 meter boring work of the second tube has been completed. So far the progress of the tunnel construction work is 65 percent.

Besides, the projects under implementation under the bridge department are Metrorail, Elevated Expressway, BRT and Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway projects.
