Dhaka, July 6: The government is mulling online trading of cattle ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, to keep the transmission of the coronavirus infection in check, even as the country is threatened by the swell in Covid-19 cases.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain said on Monday (July 5) afternoon, "We are trying to digitalise the cow markets, so people go out less to buy cows."

Asked if cattle markets will be set up in Dhaka, he said, "These issues are being discussed. If we can, we will try to sell 70 percent of the cows online and If we can, we will have the entire trading online. Discussions are underway on how we can do that."

"If we certify the sites and tell buyers to buy the cows from those sites, that will help. We can give them the cow's measurements. The cows can be kept in different places in Dhaka and if selected, they will be numbered and delivered to the buyer," he said.

Depending on the sighting of the moon, the second major religious festival of Muslims in the country, Eid-ul-Azha or Eid-ul-Adha, will be celebrated either on July 21 or on July 22.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have decided to set up temporary cattle sheds at 23 separate places in the capital on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha. Of these, 13 markets are to be set up in DNCC area and 10 in DSCC area.
