Housewife raped on polling night in 2018: 10 sentenced to death, six get life sentences

Dhaka, Feb 6: On December 30, 2018, the court sentenced 10 accused to death in the case of gang-rape of a housewife (40) in Noakhali's Subarnachar, on the night of the 11th National Parliament elections. At the same time, each accused has been fined Tk 50,000. Apart from this, six other accused have been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000. Imprisonment of two more years has been awarded in default.

Judge (District Judge) of Noakhali Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-2, Fatema Ferdous, announced the verdict at around 12:30 pm on Monday (February 5).

Those sentenced to death are Md. Ruhul Amin, Md. Hasan Ali Bulu, Md. Sohail, Swapan, Ibrahim Khalil, Abul Hossain Abu, Md. Salauddin, Md. Jasim Uddin, Md. Murad and Md. Jamal Henju.

Md. Hanif, Md. Chowdhury, Md. Badsha Alam, Mosharraf, Md. Mintu alias Helal and Md. Sohail were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Accused Md. Mintu alias Helal has been absconding since the incident. All the accused are residents of Madhya Bagya village of Charjubli union of Subarnachar upazila.

On December 30, 2018, on the day of parliamentary elections, the housewife was beaten and gang-raped after his husband and four children were tied up. When the incident happened, it was widely discussed in the country and abroad.
