Indian High Commission in Dhaka observes symbolic 'blackout' to mark Genocide Day

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 26: The Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Friday paid tribute to the 1971 Genocide by observing a symbolic one-minute blackout of the Chancery complex to honour the sacrifice of untold millions of Bangladeshi people killed and women assaulted during the Pakistani army's ‘Operation Searchlight’ 51 years ago.

"India in Bangladesh (High Commission of India, Dhaka) pays solemn tribute with a blackout of the Chancery complex to honour the sacrifice of untold millions of Bangladeshi people killed & women assaulted during ‘Operation Searchlight’, which began this night 51 years ago," the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a statement.

Indian envoy Vikram Doraiswami tweeted: "In heartfelt tribute to those who perished or were tortured in the most brutal, horrific, and barbaric crimes, this night in 1971. We mourn with brethren in Bangladesh."

Today (March 26), Bangladesh is observing its 52nd Independence Day, a day which marks the nation's victory in gaining freedom from the hands of Pakistan.
