Dhaka, October 30: Indian journalists have hailed the Bangladesh government's immediate move to curb communal violence. Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said this after returning to Dhaka following his visit to India. He made the remarks on Friday (October 29) while exchanging views with reporters at his official residence on Minto Road in the afternoon.

Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr. Hasan Mahmud on his recent visit to Kolkata, inaugurated the Bangabandhu News Center  at the Calcutta Press Club, the first press club in the subcontinent.

He also met Biman Bandopadhyay, the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, and interacted with the journalists there.

He said, "Kolkata journalists had many questions about the course of events in Bangladesh during Durga Puja. I have told them that extremist religious groups including BNP-Jamaat have tried to destroy communal harmony in the country and how the government has suppressed those attempts in the shortest possible time. There have been detailed reports in Indian newspapers, radio, television and online."

Replying to a question on the statement of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir about not participating in the election, Hasan Mahmud said, "BNP makes such statement as soon as the election comes. Not participating in the 2014 elections, not participating in the next elections after the hesitant participation in the 2018 elections will be harmful for the BNP."

Earlier, the Information Minister joined the video conference and spoke as the chief guest at his voluntary fund grant in Rangunia Upazila of Chittagong, distribution of cheques and interest free loans from the Department of Social Services to patients suffering from chronic diseases including cancer and distribution of sports goods to various clubs.

At the same time, he said, "The Awami League government does not consider who is the party or opinion in providing aid, it helps those who need it."

From the optional fund of the Information Minister, 64 people were given assistance, 10 clubs were given sports equipment, 28 people were given aid to fight chronic medical condition aid from the Department of Social Services and 49 people were given rural social service loans.
