Dhaka, March 26: Hours after arriving in Bangladesh, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Twitter message in Bengali. He thanked her for giving him a special welcome at the airport. 

"I thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving me a special welcome at the airport after landing in Dhaka," he said in a Twitter message in both Bengali and English after arriving here on a two-day state visit.

The Indian Prime Minister said the visit would further strengthen bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.

Earlier, Modi said in a Twitter message, "Even if I leave Bangladesh tomorrow, I will remember our diplomatic relations as well as the life and ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the celebration of 50 years of Bangladesh's liberation war."

In a separate Twitter message on Thursday, the Indian prime minister said New Delhi's partnership with Dhaka was an important pillar of India's Neighborhood Fast policy and "we are committed to making it closer and more diverse."

After arriving here this morning on a two-day state visit to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence and the centenary celebrations of the birth of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he was accorded a hearty welcome.

Upon arrival at the airport, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina received the Prime Minister of India.

When Narendra Modi arrived at the airport, he was greeted with 19 rounds of artillery fire. He was given a red carpet reception at the airport.

The Prime Minister of India is the fifth world leader to attend a 10-day event hosted by Bangladesh on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary and the golden jubilee of independence.

This is Narendra Modi's first foreign trip after the outbreak of Covid-19 disease worldwide.
