Appeal | Candidature Jahangir did not get the validity of the nomination even on appeal
Dhaka, May 4: Md. Jahangir Alam, the mayoral candidate discussed in the Gazipur City Corporation election, did not get the validity of the nomination paper even in the appeal. After the cancellation of the returning officer, the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner has upheld the same order in the appeal.
After hearing the appeal on Thursday, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Md. Sabirul Islam gave the cancellation order. Manjur Hossain Khan, the representative of the returning officer and the officer in charge of the media in the city elections, said this.
He said that a total of seven candidates who were excluded from the selection on Tuesday appealed. Among them were independent mayoral candidate Md. Jahangir Alam, a reserved councilor and five general ward councilor candidates. Jahangir Alam himself was present in the hearing of the appeal along with two lawyers. They claim that the surety is not in default as they have deposited the money for rescheduling. But the representative of Bangladesh Bank present at the hearing said that the appellant is still in default of the loan according to the Gana Bank Act. The loan of Jahangir Alam is the guarantor of the institution which has not yet been rescheduled. Later it was informed by the EC that Jahangir Alam and other candidates were defaulters while submitting their nominations. So even if they deposit the money later, they default.
Manjur Hossain also said that after hearing the statements of both parties, the appellate authorities upheld the order given by the returning officer by canceling the nominations of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Md. Sabirul Islam Mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam due to loan default. However, a candidate named Mohammad Ali of Ward No. 32 for the post of councilor declared the nomination invalid because the code number was wrong in the deposit receipt.
Gazipur City Election Returning Officer Faridul Islam canceled the nomination papers of Jahangir Alam as he was the guarantor of the loans of defaulting borrowers during the selection of candidates' nomination papers on April 30. The officer gave this order in the presence of Jahangir Alam. However, the nomination papers of his mother Zayda Khatun have been declared valid.
