Khaleda Zia's parole extended for another 6 months

Dhaka, March 16: BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's parole has being extended for another six months on the previous two conditions. The law ministry has agreed to suspend the sentence and extend the release period for another six months. The application was then sent to the Home Ministry.

On Wednesday (March 16th), Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said, "I have released the file. It has gone to the home ministry."

He said that under the previous conditions (not to go abroad and to seek medical treatment in the country), her release was extended for another six months. "Everything is as before, nothing new has been added."

After the opinion of the law ministry, the security services department of the home ministry will now issue a notification to extend the release period of Khaleda Zia. Khaleda Zia's release will be suspended on March 24. A few days ago, Khaleda Zia's younger brother Shamim Eskander appealed to the Home Minister to extend her release and take her abroad for treatment.

On Wednesday afternoon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters that he had received a request from Khaleda Zia's family to extend her release. It has been sent to the law ministry for examination. The opinion will be sent to the Home Ministry by Wednesday, the law minister said at a separate function at the secretariat.

Khaleda Zia has various physical complications. Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital on November 13. There, the medical board reported bleeding in her 'digestive tract' and cirrhosis of the liver. She was released from the hospital on February 1.

In the middle of last year, Khaleda Zia contracted coronavirus and had to go to hospital twice more. The 76-year-old former prime minister has been suffering from various complications including arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung and eye problems for many years.

Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two cases, was in jail. Khaleda Zia's sentence has been suspended by the executive order. Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison on February 8, 2018 in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case by the Dhaka Special Court No. 5 at Bakshibazar Alia Madrasa ground.
