Liberian ship detained at Mongla port in case filed by Chinese company

Dhaka, July 15: In view of the case filed in the High Court against the foreign ship carrying coal for Rampal thermal power plant stationed at Mongla port, the ship has been barred from leaving the port. The order issued said that the ship will be detained at Mongla port until further order is given by the High Court.

According to the arrest warrant sent by the High Court, the Liberian flag ship MV Panagia Canala arrived at Anchorage No. 11 of Harbaria in Mongla port at 10 am on Thursday, July 13, carrying 31,000 metric tons of coal from Indonesia for the Rampal thermal power plant. The admiral jurisdiction of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court ordered the ship to be detained on Wednesday (July 12), the day before the ship arrived at Mongla port. Also, the High Court has restrained the Mongla Port Authority from issuing NOC of the vessel till further orders.

Md. Abul Hasan filed this case in the High Court on July 12 on behalf of CCX Shipping Company Limited of Shanghai, China, demanding compensation of about Tk 3 crore (Tk. 2 crore 99 lakhs 451.182) against the foreign ship. In this case, High Court Judge Khizir Ahmed Chowdhury ordered the arrest of the foreign ship.

Meanwhile, Mongla Port Authority's Acting Harbor Master Captain Aminur Rahman confirmed the truth of the ship's detention on Friday afternoon and said that the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has issued a detention order to the Liberian flagged foreign commercial ship MV Panagia Canala. The concerned departments have been instructed that the ship cannot leave Mongla port till further orders. In this regard, a letter has also been sent to the concerned department of the port, Coast Guard, Navy and the local shipping agent of the ship to take necessary measures.

Khulna assistant manager of Togi Shipping and Logistics Limited, the local shipping agent of the ship, Khandkar Riazul Haque, said that the High Court has issued an arrest warrant against the ship. Mongla Port Authority has also given us a letter of this. However, the ship's coal discharge will be completed within a specified time. The reclaimed coal will be delivered to Rampal Thermal Power Station.
