Lightning kills 16 of a marriage party in Shibganj

Dhaka, August 4: At least 16 people attending a marriage party were killed in a lightning strike at a tin house on the banks of the Padma River at Shibganj in Chapainawabganj. At that time 14 people were injured. The incident took place at around 12 noon on Wednesday (August 4) at Alinagar Ghat in Char Panka Union area of the upazila.

Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shakib Al Rabbi confirmed the matter and said, "The bodies have been recovered and brought to Sadar Upazila Health Complex. The injured have been admitted to Sadar Upazila Health Complex."

Shibganj Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Farid Hossain said, "The people from groom's side were going to the bride's house in Panka village of Panka union from Narayanpur union of Sadar upazila. When it started raining, they took shelter under a tin shed on the river bank. Just then, lightning struck and killed 16 on the spot. Among the dead were 12 men and four women. The bodies were recovered from Alinagar Ghat and sent to hospital."

Md. Meherul Islam, station officer of Chapainawabganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, told Bangla Tribune, "So far we have recovered 16 bodies. Fourteen people were rescued alive and admitted to Sadar Upazila Health Complex."
