Lockdown extended in Satkhira as district reports 53 percent coronavirus infection rate

Dhaka, June 12: The extended one-week lockdown in Satkhira district is taking effect from Saturday (June 12) morning. The week-long lockdown announced earlier on June 5 ends today, Friday (June 11).

Satkhira Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said on Friday (June 11th) afternoon that a decision had been taken to extend the lockdown by one week at a meeting of the District Corona Infection Prevention Committee.

The police superintendent said Friday was the last day of the week-long lockdown in controlling the upward trend of coronavirus infection. Police have set up checkposts with barricades at various points in the district. Leaving bamboo, chairs and tables, the vehicles are blocking the road and obstructing the movement without any reason. People are traveling on foot in case of emergency. Passage to Satkhira from Khulna and Jessore has been closed.

Medical officer of Satkhira Sadar Hospital Dr. Joyonto Sarkar said that on Thursday (June 10), samples of 211 people were tested and 111 people were found to be coronavirus positive. The infection rate is 52.60 percent. The day before, on Wednesday (June 9), samples from 95 people were tested and 47 people tested positive. The infection rate was 49.47 percent.

The medical officer added that the lockdown restrictions have been tightened. Various symptoms of Covid-19 infection like cold-cough, fever, diarrhea have spread in the villages.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Mahmud, commander of the BGB's Satkhira 33 battalion, said the BGB had arrested three Bangladeshis at the Bhomra border while smuggling them from India to Bangladesh.

Satkhira Deputy Commissioner (DC) SM Mostafa Kamal said on Friday (June 11th) morning that in the last 24 hours, a mobile court had conducted 11 raids and collected fines of Tk 43,000 in 48 cases. He further said that the concerned have been requested to stop the collection of micro loans during the lockdown.
