Dhaka, June 15: Bangladesh and Switzerland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase skill training capacity in Bangladesh – which will increase opportunities for exporting skilled workers to Switzerland, especially from the medical and IT sectors.

The agreement signing ceremony was held at the bilateral meeting room of the Palais des Nations after the meeting between the President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Brest, and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday. Permanent representatives of Switzerland and Bangladesh, Jürg Lauber and Sufiur Rahman, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective countries on 'Knowledge Exchange and Skill Development'.

Swiss Confederation President Alain Brest and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the signing ceremony. Later, in a press briefing, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said that the MoU signing will pave the way for partnership in skill training and knowledge exchange.

Foreign Ministry officials said Switzerland has some specialized institutions—particularly an institute in Zurich—that works on technology and innovation, and that institute usually works with South Asian countries. The main aim of Bangladesh is to connect new specialized institutes of Bangladesh with this institute in Zurich to increase cooperation in research and innovation.

Skill development is added because, they (Switzerland) want to import skilled manpower from Bangladesh – especially from the medical and IT sectors. For that purpose, Switzerland will provide basic skill development training in Bangladesh under Bangladeshi institutions and later employ this skilled manpower in that country.
