Dhaka, July 3: A bill has been raised in Parliament to repeal the old law governing the Gandhi Ashram in Noakhali. According to the new bill, the Gandhi Trust will be governed by a board. It will be a statutory body. Acquisition and transfer of immovable and movable property of the Ashram will be with the Board. The proposed law says the government will nominate the chairman and six trustees of the board.

On Saturday (July 3), Law Minister Anisul Huq raised the Gandhi Ashram (Board of Trustees) Bill-2021 in Parliament. It was later examined within 60 days and sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for report to Parliament. The bill of the Gandhi Ashram Board of Trustees Ordinance-1975 of the military rule has been re-introduced in Bengal.

"The Board will work for the empowerment of the people, including living in peace and harmony. The Board will carry out spinning, weaving, fisheries, cottage industries, construction of houses for widows, orphans and the needy," the bill said.

The cabinet secretary said the board would have a fund, adding that they would raise funds from other sources, including the government.

"In the interest of running this historically important Gandhi Ashram, which is associated with the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, the bill has been brought only to keep the structure and activities of the trust established by the previous ordinance running without bringing any new provision in the proposed law," the minister said.
