New cabinet to be sworn in on Thursday

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 9 January 2024: Bangabhaban has made all preparations to complete the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina next Thursday. President's Press Secretary Md. Zainal Abedin told the official news agency BASS on Tuesday evening that President Md. Sahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet members.

Spokesperson of Bangabhavan said that Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain will conduct the swearing-in ceremony of the new ministers at Bangabhaban's Durbar Hall at 7:00 p.m. that day. On this occasion, Bangabhaban has prepared to organize a program with about 1000 guests and prominent people.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay a courtesy call on the President at Bangabhaban tomorrow afternoon. Earlier, Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain told reporters while talking to reporters at the Secretariat that the newly elected members of Parliament will take oath tomorrow. He said he has not yet received any instructions on the size of the cabinet and who will be in the new cabinet.

Before the swearing-in of the new cabinet tomorrow, Wednesday, the members elected in the 12th National Assembly elections will take oath. Speaker of the 11th National Parliament at 10 am. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will read the oath of newly elected members of Parliament. On January 7, the 13th National Assembly elections were held in 299 constituencies. Bangladesh Awami League won 222 seats, Jatiya Party won 11 seats and independent candidates won 62 seats, Awami League-led 14-party coalition Sharikara-Workers Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSAD) got one seat each. Bangladesh Kalyan Party has won one seat in the election.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has published the gazette with the list of 298 members of Parliament today. According to the constitution, after the official gazette publication of the election results, the speaker will administer the oath of office to the newly elected members of parliament. If the Speaker is unable or unwilling to administer the oath to the Members of Parliament within three days of publication of the Gazette, the Chief Election Commissioner shall administer the oath within the next three days.
