No empty ICU beds at five government hospitals in Dhaka

Dhaka, July 3: Patient pressure in hospitals is increasing due to the swell in coronavirus cases across the country. Relatives of the dying patients are flocking to the intensive care unit or ICU, which is especially needed for the treatment of the dying patient. Many people are rushing to the capital with patients without getting proper treatment outside the capital. Most of them are first rushing to the ICU of the government Corona Dedicated Hospital.

An analysis of data provided by the Department of Health found that none of the 90 ICU beds in the capital's five Corona Dedicated Hospitals were vacant for the treatment of dying coronavirus patients.

The hospitals are Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara, 500-bed Kurmitola General Hospital, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (Unit-2) and Burn Unit, 500-bed Mugda Medical College Hospital and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Besides, out of the total 13 corona dedicated hospitals in the capital, there are 25 vacancies out of 82 beds in other hospitals except the recently opened Dhaka North City Corporation's DNCC Dedicated Corona Hospital.

According to the Department of Health, there are 26 ICUs in the Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital in Uttara, 10 in the 500-bed Kurmitola General Hospital, 20 in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (Unit-2) and Burn Unit, 24 in the 500-bed Mugda Medical College Hospital and 10 in the ICU of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. There are no ICU beds empty in any of these five hospitals.

Among other Corona Dedicated Government Hospitals, Sheikh Russell Gastroliver Hospital has eight out of 16 ICU beds, Government Employees Hospital, Fulbaria has one out of six beds, Rajarbagh Police Hospital has two out of 15 beds, National Heart Institute and Hospital has four out of 10 beds and TB Hospitals have three out five ICU beds of the 250-bed facility, four out of 10 ICU beds in National Chest Diseases Institute and Hospital and only three out of 20 ICU beds in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) are vacant.

Apart from this, only Dhaka North City Corporation's (DNCC) Corona Hospital has 102 out of 212 ICU beds vacant.

According to the Department of Health, out of the 18 hospitals identified as Corona Dedicated at the government level, 13 hospitals have a total of 384 ICU beds. There are a total of 127 beds vacant. Out of these 127 beds, 102 beds belong to the DNCC Hospital.

There are a total 441 ICU beds at 28 private coronavirus hospitals. As of July 2, 255 ICU beds in private hospitals are vacant.
