No pressure to vote: CEC tells diplomats

Own correspondent, Dhaka, 5 January 2024: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said in a meeting with diplomats that there is no pressure to vote.

He said, voters are not being pressured to vote, rather they are being persuaded to come and vote. CEC told reporters after the meeting at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on Thursday. Before this, the Election Commission held a meeting with the diplomats regarding the environment and overall preparations for the 12th Parliament elections.

The meeting was attended by ambassadors of different countries, heads of missions, heads of international organizations and resident representatives of UNDP in Bangladesh. After the meeting, European Union (EU) Ambassador Charles Whiteley said, "I have heard about the EC's preparations for the elections." When asked whether he was satisfied with the election environment, he said, no comments.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said, "Hopefully there will be a successful election, which will be a milestone for the democratic process of Bangladesh."
