Noakhali: High Court forms three-member committee, orders probe into police negligence

Dhaka, October 6: The High Court has formed a three-member committee on Monday, who will probe if there was any police negligence in the Noakahli domestic abuse case. The apex court slammed police inaction and asked what they were doing for 32 days before the video of the women being stripped and tortured went viral.

The court said, "After 32 days, the video went viral - what did the police do before that?"

The remarks were made on Monday (October 5) by a bench (virtual) comprising of High Court Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim. The court then issued a rule and gave five-point instructions.

Advocate AM Aminuddin, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association; Secretary of the Association, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal; Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Advocate Yadia Zaman, Jamiul Haque Faisal, Rashida Chowdhury Nilu, Tanzim Al Islam were present in the court.

Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Russell Chowdhury represented the state.

During the hearing, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the role of Begumganj police and said, "Police became active 32 days after the incident when the video went viral. What have they done before? If this video had not gone viral, the police would not have taken action against those involved. The incident would have remained hidden from everyone's eyes."

Earlier in the morning, Supreme Court lawyers Z I Khan Panna and Abdullah Al Mamun brought to the notice of the court reports on the incident published in various national dailies on Monday (October 5). The court asked them to submit a written application after being brought to their notice. He scheduled the hearing at 2.30 pm.

The hearing began at the court's scheduled time after the noon break. At the hearing, advocates Z I Khan Panna and Abdullah Al Mamun appealed for the removal of the viral video from social media.

It is to be mentioned that the video of torturing a woman in a village of Eklashpur Union in Begumganj of Noakhali has gone viral through social media.

The video shows a young man stripping and beating a woman. One of them placed a foot over the woman's face. Despite repeated pleas, the torture did not stop.
