Dhaka, April 6: In Gaibandha, two more women were killed and 12 others were injured when they were crushed under a tree and branches that collapsed in the Kalbaishakhi storm. The storm killed five people in Sadar upazila, three in Palashbari, two in Fulchhari and one each in Sundarganj and Gobindaganj on Sunday evening.

Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Md Abdul Matin confirmed the deaths of 12 people. The storm affected about 16,000 people and 4,500 houses in 43 unions in six of the district's seven upazilas. Various crops have been damaged in 850 hectares of land.

Meanwhile, the villages in the vicinity of the district town were not connected to electricity for 24 hours.

The deceased have been identified as Batasi Begum, 32, wife of Aminul Islam of Chithuliachar village under Mollarchar union of Sadar upazila and Sharmin Begum, 20, wife of Nazmul Hossain of Rampura village under Harirampur union of Gobindaganj upazila.

Gobindganj Upazila Harirampur Union Parishad Chairman Shahjahan Ali said Sharmin Begum, who was injured in the storm, died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Monday morning.

District relief officer Idris Ali said Batasi Begum was injured in the storm and died at her home on Monday morning.

Gaibandha Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director Md Masudur Rahman said 869 hectares of land in Sadar, Fulchhari, Palashbari, Sundarganj, Gobindaganj and Sadullapur upazilas have been damaged by the storm. Of this, 830 hectares are maize, 20 hectares are boro paddy, 16 hectares are bananas and 3 hectares are sunflowers, he said.

Md. Moazzem Hossain, chief assistant of the district relief office, said the storm had caused extensive damage to 4,326 houses. At least 15,860 people from 43 unions of 6 upazilas were affected. Numerous trees and electricity poles have been uprooted.
