One Hundred people elected unopposed as UP chairman in third phase

Dhaka, November 13: In the third phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections, 100 chairmen have been elected unopposed across the country, while a total of 569 candidates have been elected unopposed. Apart from the chairman, 337 candidates have been elected unopposed for the post of general member and 132 for the post of reserved women member. Asaduzzaman, joint secretary of the Election Commission (EC), confirmed this to Jago News on Saturday (November 13).

Earlier, 72 candidates in the first phase and 81 candidates in the second phase became the chairman unopposed. In the third phase of the election, 100 unions are going to get the chairman without any competition. In three stages, a total of 253 chairmen were elected unopposed.

In the third phase, polling will be held on November 28 in 1,007 UPs of the country. Elections will also be held in 10 municipalities of the country on the same day. In this election, in 14 UPs of Raozan, Chittagong, the chairman, general member and women member of the reserved ward submitted nomination papers to the returning officer as the sole candidate for all the posts. In 14 unions, there are 126 members in general wards and 42 women members in reserved wards. Nomination papers were submitted one by one for all these posts. Apart from this, only Awami League candidates have submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman in six UPs in Rangunia.

The BNP, one of the main parties in the country, is boycotting the elections. On the other hand, the opposition Jatiya Party is not very active in the field. Several EC officials told Jago News that several Jatiya Party members were negotiating with the Awami League candidates.

In the fourth phase, 840 Union Parishads (UPs) will go to the polls on December 23. The last date for submission of nomination papers in these unions is November 25. Selection of nomination papers on November 29. Appeals will be heard from November 30 to December 2 and disposed from December 3 to 5. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 6. Symbol will be allocated on December 7.
