Dhaka, March 9: The participation of women in judicial work in the country is gradually increasing. Fifty years ago there was only one woman judge in the country. At present, there are 580 women judges engaged in judicial (subordinate) courts of the country.

According to Supreme Court sources, currently, the number of judges in subordinate courts is more than two thousand. Among them, the number of male judges is more than 1400 and the number of female judges is about 600.

Md. Moazzem Hoshain, Special Officer of High Court Division of the Supreme Court, said that currently 580 women judges are working from District Judge to Assistant Judge. That is, almost one-third of the total judges of the subordinate courts are women.

Those concerned say that the number of women judges in subordinate courts has increased more than before. As such, the number of women judges in the country is sufficient. However, they expect this number to increase further. Women are performing their duties efficiently in judiciary. The number of women judges in subordinate courts is now about one-third. Those concerned hope that this number will be equal in the future (women and men).

However, they expressed disappointment as the number of women judges in the high court was comparatively less. They said more women judges should come in high and supreme courts. Many women judges who are qualified to become judges of high and supreme courts are working in subordinate courts.

Bangladesh's first female judge and Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana said that many female judges who are qualified to become judges are working in subordinate courts. There are also qualified women lawyers.
