Dhaka, June 16: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said her government is working to ensure overall development of the country. She said if the much-awaited Padma Bridge is inaugurated on June 25, the people of the southern part of the country will no longer be neglected.

Sheikh Hasina said, "People in the south or across the Padma have always been neglected. Poverty is our constant companion. By the infinite mercy of Allah, that situation will no longer exist. Because, we have completed the work of Padma Bridge by facing a huge challenge, which is going to be inaugurated on 25th June."

The Prime Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of Palli Janpad, Rangpur and Bangabandhu Academy for Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development (BAPARD), Kotalipara, Gopalganj on Thursday morning.

The Prime Minister was virtually connected in the event organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives on the occasion from her official residence Ganobhaban, Palli Janpad, Rangpur and Bapard, Kotalipara, Gopalganj. She said that the people of the south, who had been neglected all their lives, would no longer be neglected. Because, if the communication system is improved in a place, then the economic condition of that place is naturally improved. That is the reality.

Regarding the inauguration of the Padma Bridge on June 25, she called upon all to be patient and said that after the inauguration of the bridge, no one should have an unhealthy competition with cars so that no accident could take place.

Sheikh Hasina, the architect of the Padma Bridge, said the festival would be held not only on the banks of the Padma, but also in every district of the country. Because, it was a huge challenge for the country.

The Prime Minister said many people had no idea that Bangladesh could build a bridge over the Padma, one of the fastest flowing rivers in the world. Then again the bridge will be a two-story bridge, with trains going down and cars going up. This is a very difficult task and this is the first time in the world that such a task is felt. The kind of machineries that have been used here seem to have been not used anywhere else. There were also several obstacles that stood in the way of the construction of this bridge.
