Dhaka, June 27: An appeal has been filed in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking a ban on the political programmes of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The application was made by Tariqat Federation Secretary General Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri's lawyer Barrister Tanya Amir.

A complaint of contempt of court has been filed against Jamaat for demanding registration by holding political programs after the High Court of the country canceled the registration. At the same time, ban on their political program has been sought.

On Monday, June 26, the Appellate Division Justice Md. Abu Zafar Siddiqui's Chamber Judge Court gave this order. The court has sent the two applications to the full bench of the Appellate Division on July 31 for hearing. The application was filed by three persons namely Maulana Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, Md. Humayun Kabir and Imdadul Haque, seeking a ban on Jamaat's political program and accusing them of contempt of court. Barrister Tanya Amir heard the petition in court.

Barrister Tanya Amir said, "We have filed two separate applications. That is - seeking ban on Jamaat's political program while the application to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court regarding registration is pending. The other is to file contempt of court charges for holding Jamaat's political programme after 10 years while an application is pending in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court regarding registration. The matter is scheduled to be heard in the regular and full bench of the full Appellate Division on July 31."

She said that after the cancellation of the registration by the court, the Jamaat leaders demanded the return of the registration through a political programme, which amounts to contempt of court. Another is that a ban has been sought on holding all kinds of political programs under the banner of Jamaat or using their symbols. The chamber court accepted both the petitions and sent them to the full bench of the Appellate Division, fixing July 31 for hearing.

After more than a decade, Jamaat held a rally at the Engineers Institution auditorium in the capital on June 10 with the verbal permission of the police. In the rally, Jamaat leaders demanded the return of the party's registration and the release of party leaders and activists.
