Dhaka, November 28: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge on Sunday (November 29) at 10:30 am via video conference from Ganobhaban.

According to the Railway Ministry, the foundation stone laying ceremony has been organised at the west and east ends of Bangabandhu Bridge.

Railway Minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujan will preside over the function from the western end of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge will be about 4.80 km, including the parallel dual gauge double truck of the existing Bangabandhu Bridge. A total of 30 km of railway line will be constructed on both sides of the bridge, including about .05 km of viaduct, about 667 km of railway approach, embankment end and look and siding.

As the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge is a dual gauge double track, there is no need to wait at the stations as before due to the crossing of the respective trains running between the eastern and western regions. As a result, the running time of the concerned trains will be reduced by approximately 20 minutes, operating expenses will be reduced and the revenue of the railways will be increased. Gas transmission pipeline will be laid on this bridge.

The construction of this railway bridge will be completed in August 2024. The railway minister recently expressed hope that the bridge would be opened for train operations in the same year.
