PM inaugurates country's first Metro Rail

Dhaka, December 28: Another dream of the people of Bangladesh comes true. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the much-desired dream metro rail.

On Wednesday (December 28) after 11:00 PM, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the metro rail by unveiling the name plaque at the C-1 Block playground of Uttara Sector 15.

Earlier, the Prime Minister reached Uttara to inaugurate the Metrorail. Sheikh Rehana, daughter of the Father of the Nation and younger sister of the Prime Minister, was present with her at the inauguration ceremony. Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, Secretary of Roads and Highways Department ABM Aminullah Noori, Managing Director (MD) of DMTCL MAN Siddique, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam and other senior government officials were also present at the event.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is responsible for the construction and management of metro rail in Dhaka. The company said, initially, the metro rail will run from Uttara to Agargaon. It will take 10 minutes and 10 seconds to cover this distance of nearly 12 km by metro rail.

According to DMTCL, the trains will not stop midway while running from Uttara to Agargaon. Although there are 9 stations on this route of 11.73 km, other than Uttara and Agargaon passengers will not get this facility.

Meanwhile, metro rail tickets are also getting a touch of modernity. There will be no paper tickets for metro rail travel. You have to buy the card from the metro rail station. Initially, two types of cards will be available at the stations. Permanent and Single Journey cards. Initially, cards can be collected from Uttara and Agargaon stations. The fare for this route is Tk 60.

However, the 10-year permanent card has to be purchased for Tk 200. This card can be recharged as needed for travel. Registration is required to get a permanent card. Registration link will be given on DMTCL website on Thursday (December 29). Registration can be done from this day. To register you will need your name, parent's name, National Identity Card (NID) or passport number, mobile number, e-mail ID.

Cards can be purchased from ticket office machines (TOMs) at stations with the help of sales staff. Apart from this, passengers can automatically collect cards from the vending machine.
