Policeman shot during eviction of slums in Shahjahanpur

Dhaka, Jan 22: A police constable named Mehdi Hasan (24) was shot during a slum eviction operation at the Shahjahanpur playground in the capital. Apart from this, five people, including Shahjahanpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sujit Kumar Saha and Inspector-Operation Maidul Islam, were injured in the clash.

This incident took place around 2:30 pm on Sunday. Mehedi Hasan, who was shot, was rescued and brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital. The rest were treated at the police hospital.

Mehedi Hasan, who was shot, said that the slum dwellers suddenly attacked the city corporation and the police during the evacuation of the slums from the Shahjahanpur playground in the afternoon.

"We fired to prevent the attack of the slum dwellers. A bullet hit my left leg. The doctor admitted me to ward number 102," he added.

Bachchu Mia, in-charge inspector of police camp of DMC Hospital, said that a policeman named Mehedi Hasan was shot during the evacuation operation led by Dhaka South City Corporation in Shajahanpur playground area. The policeman is currently undergoing treatment in ward number 102.

Shahjahanpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sujit Kumar Saha said that during the Dhaka South City Corporation's eviction drive, the slum dwellers started pelting bricks and stones at the police and City Corporation personnel.

"During this time, five policemen including myself and my police station inspector (operation) Maidul Islam were injured by bricks," he said.
