Prime Minister wants to increase communication with India

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 29: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has emphasized on the need for enhanced communication between Bangladesh and India in the mutual interest, and said that steps had been taken to re-open the inter-border routes between the two countries which were closed in 1965.

She said, "We need to increase communication. If communication between the two countries increases, the northeastern Indian states of Assam and Tripura will be able to use the Chittagong port."

The Prime Minister made the remarks during a courtesy call on Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Ganobhaban on Thursday afternoon.

After the meeting, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists.

During the meeting, they expressed satisfaction over the current state of bilateral relations between the two countries. In this context, the Prime Minister said the high-level visit between the two countries would provide impetus to take the relationship forward.

The Indian minister said bilateral issues between the two countries were being reviewed and progress was being made. Cooperation in the defense sector, water sharing in the Kushiyara and Feni rivers, the current Covid situation and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the world economy were discussed.

The Prime Minister said the Covid-19 situation is under control in Bangladesh and Jaishankar said normalcy is returning to India too.

Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen, Senior Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Md. Tofazzal Hossain Mia and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami were present on the occasion.

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon.
