Dhaka, Ocotber 6: Construction of the second channel of the tunnel Bangabandhu tunnel under the Karnafuli river will be completed on Friday (October 8). As a result, its entrance will be opened that day. Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (October 5).

He said the entrance of the second channel of Bangabandhu Tunnel, one of the mega and dream projects, will be opened on Friday night. The opening of a channel had already been opened. Construction of the two will be completed by midnight on Friday.

The planning minister further said, “It was supposed to be launched on December 22 next year. But now we can open it on before it seems. It is a matter of joy for all."

The Bangabandhu Tunnel will be connected to Anwara from Patenga in Chittagong with a depth of 45 meters in the water level of Karnafuli river. The construction of the 3.43-kilometre-long tunnel is being funded by China at a cost of USD 705 million (BDT 60,46,86,46,650). The Bangladesh government is bearing the cost of land acquisition and administration.

Tunnels are being built along the bottom of the Karnafuli river in Chittagong. This is the country's first tunnel to allow vehicular movement. The tunnel will become operational in December next year.

For the first time in the country, the name of this tunnel under construction under a river is 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel'. The cost is Tk 10 thousand 374 crore. Chittagong will change if this tunnel is opened. River-hill and sea-estuary Chittagong will get a new look. Another Chittagong will be built on the other side of the river. Housing system, including trade and commerce, will be expanded. Like Shanghai in China, Chittagong will be a one-city city-to-town.

One end of the tunnel starts from the side of the Naval Academy in Patenga. It went through the bottom of the river towards Anwar. The length of this path at the bottom of the river is 3.32 km. All the way you will be under a lot of water. Now it takes an hour to cross the road, with the tunnel, it will take only five minutes. The tunnel can be reached from the tourist city of Cox's Bazar and Matarbari deep seaport.

Besides, the country's first deep seaport is being built in the Matarbari area of Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar. Banshkhali is a coal based thermal power plant. There is an LNG station in Maheshkhali. Anwara is a large economic zone. Bangabandhu Tunnel will play a revolutionary role in communicating with these mega projects.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the tunnel on October 14, 2016. Since then, the work of the project has been in full swing.
