Dhaka, August 17: So far, nine Bangladeshis have been reported to be in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

Jahangir Alam, Bangladesh's ambassador to Afghanistan, said six of the nine Bangladeshis in Kabul, Afghanistan, were BRAC workers and had already taken refuge in the home of the country's BRAC resident director. Three others are being held in Kabul prisons.

The six BRAC workers are Karim Sikder of Dhaka district, Asaduzzaman of Rangpur, Mohammad Sarfaraz of Dhaka, Kamal Hossain of Jessore, Rafiqul Haque Mridha of Faridpur and Yusuf Hossain of Noakhali. These people are trying to return to Bangladesh on the flight on August 18 tomorrow.

The ambassador said the Taliban had broken into the prison where the other three Bangladeshis were being held and all the prisoners had escaped. Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi named Moin Al Mesbah contacted them after his release from prison. His home is in Khulna. The other two are Kausar Sultana of Vasantek in Dhaka and Obaidullah of Noakhali. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

The ambassador said Moin, who was able to get out of jail, was advised to return to the country on the next available flight.

Jahangir Alam is Bangladesh's ambassador to Uzbekistan. As there is no embassy of Bangladesh in Afghanistan, he is in charge as the ambassador to Afghanistan. Jahangir is also the ambassador to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
