Dhaka, September 28: The Parliamentary Committee has recommended the closure of tanneries in Savar's tannery industrial city that have not applied for environmental clearance and are unlikely to ensure compliance. This recommendation was made in the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change held on Tuesday (September 27) at Sangsad Bhavan.

In the meeting presided over by committee president Saber Hossain Chowdhury, committee members Environment Minister Md Shahab Uddin, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Tanveer Shakeel Joy, Rezaul Karim Bablu and Md Shaheen Chakladar participated in the meeting. Besides, representatives of Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Commerce and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) were present in the meeting.

After the meeting, Saber Hossain Chowdhury informed about this decision. State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder attended Tuesday's meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on a special invitation. Besides, the senior secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, an additional secretary of the Ministry of Industry and the Chairman of BSCIC also participated.

Saber Hossain Chowdhury said, "The purpose of shifting tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar was to prevent pollution. But now the Dhaleswari river in Savar is almost dead. Earlier Buriganga was damaged now Dhaleswari. There is no solid waste treatment system in the tannery town. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has admitted that they have failures."
