Tension erupts in Dhaka New Market after college students, shopkeepers clash

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 19: Clashes erupted between the students of Dhaka College and local shopkeepers in the capital's New Market area on the early hours of Tuesday.

According to reports, the clash broke out at around 12 midnight on Tuesday (April 19). At least two students were injured in the clash.

Students alleged that two students pursuing Masters at Dhaka College had gone to New Market for shopping around 12 midnight. They had a verbal spat with the shopkeepers during shopping. A group of students of Dhaka College then went to New Market area when the news spread that two students had been stabbed by the traders. Later clashes broke out between the shopkeepers and students.

However, the names of the two injured students have not been confirmed yet.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s Ramna Division Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) in Newmarket Zone, Sharif Mohammad Farooquzzaman, said at around 1 am that clashes were still going on. Additional police forces have been deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

When asked about the reason behind the clash, the police official said, "There is no definite reason right now. I will be able to speak on the matter after the situation is brought under control."
